Kdg.-1st Grade
Students will be learning basic music concepts (pitch; high/low, rhythm; long/short, dynamics; loud/soft, tempo; fast/slow, articulation; smooth connected/short separated, and timbre; different instrument voices). Primary students will move, play instruments, sing, play song games, and read stories to begin understanding these concepts. Students will begin to read musical notation as they learn basic rhythms (using the notes and rests below) and as they learn to sing musical pitches. The major scale is built on a set of 8 pitches. As students sing they will incorporate the solfege hand symbols and pitch syllables. Students should learn and know these pitch and rhythm symbols by the time they enter 3rd grade. These symbols will be used throughout their general music education. Use the diagrams below it help your child retain what they are learning in music class. Encourage them to tell you about the symbols and teach you what they sound like.
